How To Measure Your Dress Length

How to measure your dress length. The first step in how to measure for a dress is determining the correct length. Dress length is sometimes reffered to as hemline (but then it is most often measured from the floor and up.) see illustration below for different dress lengths. To measure dress length, all you’ll need is a flat surface and a measuring tape.

Run the measuring tape over your shoulder, and let it hang down to your hand. Measure from the center of the collarbone (hollow) to the dress hem. Measure from the point where the yoke meets the sleeve, straight across, to the same point on the other side.

Sleeve length for dress shirts are measured from the center of your back because dress shirts have a loose fitting shoulder and armhole that does not. Flare is the bottom wide length of your dress. This is the length of the flare of your dress.

Shorter length or mini dresses will hit at the upper to mid thigh. Midi dresses should fall below the knee or at the calf. This is the widest part of your hip, across the hipbone.

Remember, it's always easier to take something in than to let it out. Lay the dress out flat on the surface, making sure all straps and ruffles lie flat. Measure the length from your hollow to the hem of your dress.

Grab a piece of paper and draw an outline around your foot trying to keep the pen vertical or the pencil vertical. If your dress has straps, place the measuring tape on top of the uppermost strap. Do not adjust for shrinkage.

A short length dress should measure to the hem of the dress. Button up the shirt and spread the shirt out on its front. Place one end of the measuring tape at the base of the center of the back of the neck.

Shirt length put the first end of the measuring tape at the base of the back of your neck and measure down your back to the point where you’d want the shirt to end. Measure to the center of the meaty part of your palm. Hem would refer to where your dress will end.

Take the tape around the shoulder. This is the smallest part of your waist. Drawing this line is okay around the sock, but don’t actually be wearing shoe.

Measure across the top of the waistband from one side of the pant to the other. Stand upright in your bare feet and your feet together. The length is not measured starting from the garment neckline.

Measure from the hollow just under your neck to the floor. Draw the outline of your foot all the way around your foot. We will do that for you.

Lay the pants down on a flat surface, face up. Measuring your sleeve length isn’t difficult, but it is something that a lot of people get wrong. Extend it to the bottom of the dress and note the measurement.

Use your hands to spread the pants out flat, with the waistband buttoned at the front and the fly zipped close. Measure from the shoulder point, and take the tape through the bust point, then down to the hem at one side. How to measure your body:

The measurement is taken from side seam to side seam directly under the armhole or sleeve. Dress length is the length from transition between shoulder and neck and down to the hemline of the dress. Measure around the fullest part of your neck, but don’t measure too tightly—a finger or two should fit between the measuring tape and your neck.

Try to put your foot on the paper the long ways. The front of the waistband should lay directly on top of the back of the waistband. Do this with the shoes you will be wearing with your full length gown or dress for best results.

This point is usually the bottom of the buttocks, although you may want to go slightly longer if you plan to always tuck the shirt in, or slightly. To get a sense of how long a style will be on you, compare your body length to the shoulder to hem length indicated in the item's fit information. Arm length is from the top of your arm to your wrist, this measurement starts at the shoulder and is often used for casual shirt sizing. Wear a shirt that fits you well, and measure the distance between armhole seams across your back.
